About the event
What can we learn from the Book of Acts and the early days of the Christian church? In this lecture, Rev. Sandy will address the tension between the vision of Acts, expressed through radical inclusiveness and heroic imagery, and the reality of the formation of the church within a Roman society experiencing fundamental change. He will consider how the early church was successful, as well as some troublesome legacies that continue to impact us today.
The recorded lecture will be posted to the Strathearn YouTube channel on April 23rd, 2024.
Following Sandy’s lecture, you are invited to join us for an in-person conversation on this topic. Participants are invited, if they so wish, to bring their own questions and insights to the safe and welcoming environment of this conversation.
Points for reflection and/or discussion might include:
- What happened to that triumphant vision of Christianity expressed in the Book of Acts?
- What are the high points of Acts that we can look to and celebrate?
- What are the darker moments?
- Acts is about Christians trying to fit into the Roman Empire. Today, how do we share our vision of the Kingdom of God in a world that doesn’t want to hear it?
- How do we manage our own expectations?
- How can the Book of Act still be an inspiring tool?
All are welcome!
